A ferret is a unique pet that will give you a tremendous amount of joy. These furry and gentle creatures ask for nothing but love, and attention. When you are researching ferrets and trying to plan the perfect environment for your pet’s health, you will want to take some extra time to plan for the snacks to maintain a healthy ferret diet. Diet is very important for your pet and cannot be ignored.
Ferrets are wonderful pets. They are very smart, are incredibly cute, and have the ability to wrap their owner around their tiny little finger. As a ferret owner, I can tell you that the hardest thing to do is look into those beautiful eyes and not share when you are eating. So, it’s important to take some steps to make sure that you aren’t sharing “bad” foods with your pet.
Most ferrets are lactose intolerant so they can’t have milk products, or cheese, or cheese cake, or anything that has dairy in it. Sounds easy doesn’t it? But, ferrets also love sugary and sweet things, like sugar coated mini wheats, etc., and if you leave a bowl on your table or counter, they will wait until you aren’t looking and take advantage of the opportunity to nibble your cereal and milk. This is really bad for them and you need to remember to keep the bad foods out of reach of your very smart furry friend.
Think high protein when you are planning treats. Meat, eggs or egg products, baby food meats without carbs, muscle or organ meat. When you are planning treats it is important to remember that they don’t have great digestive systems and can’t digest fruits, vegetables, and grains. They love these items, but when they eat them it can make them sick, cause tooth problems, and they can become malnourished from too many treats.
There are many ferret treats sold. When you are looking for treats, making sure that they are high in protein and low in carbs will be very helpful. What you will probably find though, is that whatever you are eating is way more interesting than a treat that is “officially” a ferret treat.
My ferret will only eat her meals out of a spoon, so she eats when I eat. She is a little spoiled, but is a wonderful pet that has been with me for several years. To keep her out of my plate and eating healthy, I had to come up with a plan for her meals and treats.
Ferrets love a schedule and keeping them on an eating schedule will keep them healthy. When they are given food and aren’t hungry, they will hide it. You can keep your ferret’s treats on their plate when you eat. That way you know she is getting the foods that she needs and she isn’t trying to sneak the bad foods off your plate when you are not looking.
Making sure that you have snacks to maintain a healthy ferret diet on hand is very important. There is nothing worse than a ferret with an upset stomach. You will find that this is a wonderful, loving pet that will give you years of joy.
